香港小姐競選乃一年一度之盛大選美活動，每年誕生的香港小姐，會代表香港參加國際性的選美活動，並在香港旅遊協會安排下，以「香港親善大使」身份遠遊訪問，宣揚香港的特色，敦睦友誼，而在本港，也能達到親善睦鄰的目的。
1979年度香港小姐競選準決賽於五月十九日在利舞台舉行，而本年度香港小姐冠軍已於五月廿六日的決賽中，艷壓群芳，脫穎而出。

An unprecedented total of 928 young Hong Kong women entered the Miss Hong Kong 1979 Pageant, an encouraging reflection of the prestigious and respected status of the competition.
Preliminary screening of entrants was held by the Pageant's organizers, HK-TVB, to select 30 semi-finalists from the total applications, a challenging task. The semi-finalists were held at the Lee Theatre on 19 May, when 15 finalists were chosen.
And Tonight, Miss Hong Kong 1979 has stepped from among the finalists' ranks, to the applause of a capacity Theatre audience, and the cheers of millions of television viewers watching the live Finals broadcast…
