香港小姐競選是本港最矚目的選美盛會，今年已是第十七年舉行。近年來，香港小姐在各個國際選美盛會中，屢獲殊榮，為港增光，成績有目共睹，是每位市民所公認，證明了香港小姐是香港最具代表的選美盛會。
香港是一個充滿活力的都會，大都會的時代女性，充滿幹勁活力，勇於追尋理想，也積極發展事業、關心社會、散發著大都會的魅力，因此一九八九年度香港小姐競選大會主題，亦定名為「香港 - 魅力之都，參加香港小姐競選，散發大都會魅力，分享國際友誼。」總決賽於八月二十日晚在新近落成的香港文化中心隆重舉行。

The Miss Hong Kong Pageant, which enters into its seventeenth anniversary this year, is the most glamorous premier beauty contest in Hong Kong. Titleholders from the Pageant had won numerous awards in different international beauty contests, helping to boost tremendously Hong Kong's image worldwide. The achievements and contributions by Miss Hong Kong titleholders further establish the Pageant's position as the most representative beauty contest in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is a dynamic cosmopolitan. Cosmopolitan women are full of energy, bold to their ideals, positive in pursuing their careers and care about the community. They are full of charisma. It is therefore the main theme for Miss Hong Kong 1989 Pageant is "Hong Kong, the capital of charisma. Miss Hong Kong possesses cosmopolitan charisma and fosters international friendship."
The Miss Hong Kong 1989 Pageant Final was held in the newly completed Hong Kong Cultural Centre on the evening of August 20.
